What is a Special?

Generally a special is a non licensed medicine which is not commercially available from your normal wholesaler and so has to be specially manufactured or procured. These consist of:

Why do doctors prescribe 'Specials'?

There are many reasons why a doctor would prescribe a special:

  • Patients with swallowing difficulties can be treated with a liquid alternative. A tailor made liquid medicine avoids the need of patients and carers to crush tablets or mix capsule contents for administration. Such manipulations render the medicine unlicensed and switches liability to both the prescriber and the person administering the medicine.
  • Complex dermatological conditions may require special combinations of ingredients and or the dilution of steroid creams and ointments for long
    term use.
  • Patients may have allergies to certain excipients in proprietary medicines
    such as lanolin, lactose or starch and may require a formula with these
    omitted.
  • Flavorings in liquid medicines can be added or omitted to aid patient compliance.
