Tips on Ordering Specials

Before placing your special order you should complete the following checks,

Check the British National Formulary (BNF) first.

Customer service

Is the prescription computer generated? Odd concoctions do not work well on standard prescribing packages.

Is the prescriber aware that the product is a special? This is important both from a financial point of view and a liability point of view as prescribers are liable for any off-license adverse effects including reactions to excipients.

Check the final concentrations of the active from a clinical point of view. A dilution requested on a prescription may render the ingredient sub-therapeutic.

Check for decimal points. A favorite is requests for 5% menthol which should be 0.5%. This would be a whole counter pack of crystals in 100g of cream!

If the ingredients are expressed in percentages, do they add up to 100 per cent?

Are there any special details to consider such as preservative- free, lanolin free etc?

Are the ingredients pharmaceutically compatible, eg a steroid cream is best diluted with a cream base such as aqueous cream. Paraffin bases are best for ointments.

For private prescriptions, agree a price with the supplier and patient before ordering, this avoids any un-necessary shocks when the patient is presented with the bill on collection.
