About Quantum Specials
Quantum Specials Ltd is a unique pharmaceutical specials manufacturer' based in the North East of England, which recognises the need to produce a wide range of products which are tailor made using modern pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, within two exceptionally high standard clean room environments to ensure patient health and safety requirements are met.
All medicines produced at Quantum are bespoke. There are no limits to our range of products. We currently have over 5000 formulas on our database and this number increases on a daily basis adding between 10 and 20 new formulas to our range each week. All manufactured products are made to GMP standards by fully trained and experienced technicians.
History of Quantum Specials
Quantum Specials Ltd was fully formed in November 2004 by four former managers of the Unichem owned Eldon Laboratories. Eldon Laboratories was sold by Unichem to a specials manufacturer based in the South of England. The business was relocated from the North East to their own factory.
Quantum Specials began trading on 14th February 2005 from facilities within Tyne Metropolitan College, Wallsend. The high standard clean rooms at the college were originally built for Siemens Electronics and they provided Quantum with facilities which were more than suitable to manufacture 'specials'.
Quantum continues to grow its customer base, supplying 'specials' to many major pharmacy chains, small buying groups as well as independent pharmacies. We pride ourselves in offering the same precedence to all customers whether it be a single owner pharmacy or a 1000 shop multi chain. The key to our success is providing the patient, regardless as to which pharmacy they have taken their script to, with the best quality medicines in the shortest time.
Quantum soon realised that to keep up with the growing demand for specials whilst continuing to provide our customers with the service they had began to rely on, our only option was to re-locate to bigger premises.
The site at Burnopfield, on the outskirts of County Durham, was acquired in the autumn of 2006. The site was chosen for many reasons one of which was its excellent links to the major roads and public transport facilities. It is also closer to our courier service depot allowing Quantum to have later collections times giving us greater capacity to manufacture even more 'Specials'. The building itself was the former home of a plastics factory. To bring the building up to the standards required by the MHRA, in excess of £1 million was invested into the site. With the dedication and skills of the many tradesmen, Quantum staff, suppliers and customers, the former Plastics factory was dismantled and in its place a state of the art clean room facility was created.
Staff began working from the new site in August 2007 and the new facility has enabled Quantum to dramatically increase their capacity for processing pharmacy and dispensary orders. Up to 500 manufactured specials and between 300 and 400 re-wholesaled specials per day are now being despatched from the new site.
Quantum Secures £32.5 Million Funding Package
Management at Quantum Specials, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of tailor-made medicines to the pharmaceutical industry, has completed a buyout supported by a £32.5million funding package from leading mid-market private equity house LDC and Yorkshire Bank.
Based in Burnopfield, County Durham, the business produces ‘specials’ - bespoke drug formulations which are not readily available from drug manufacturers. It supplies wholesalers, pharmacies, chemists, dispensing doctors and hospitals across the UK.
Since it was established in 2004, Quantum Specials has grown rapidly due to its focus on quality of service and the rising demand for its products. The business is forecast to generate sales of £22million this year and employs over 100 people.
LDC has invested £14million in Quantum Specials through a combination of loans and shares. A management team, led by managing director Ian Edge, has also invested in shares in the company.
The transaction was supported by a £18.5million package of senior debt and working capital facilities from Yorkshire Bank Corporate and Structured Finance.
The buyout provides an exit for corporate shareholder Phoenix Medical Supplies and founding shareholder Andrew Patterson.
Quantum Specials was set up in September 2004 by four former managers of the Unichem- owned Eldon Laboratories.
Following the sale of the Eldon business and the subsequent closure of its sites, Quantum Specials has provided employment for many of the former Eldon employees and its growth has led to significant job creation in the area.
The business has developed a service which enables a 24 hour turnaround from the initial pharmacist’s order, through to manufacture, and eventual delivery to the patient.
It currently has over 1200 formulas on its database and around 20 more are added to the range each week.
The medicines are manufactured at its 66,000 sq ft site which includes state of the art clean room facilities and where in excess of 600 orders per day are processed.
Ian Edge, managing director of Quantum Specials, said: “After nearly five years of rapid growth, this deal comes at a crucial time in our development and will bring on board the expertise and financial backing we need to take the business forward.
“The buyout will help us further enhance our customer service levels, something which has been the bedrock of our success. It also provides us with a strategic investor with whom we can work closely to explore new routes to market.
“With a strong track record of investing in the pharmaceutical industry, LDC has demonstrated a clear appreciation of our sector and John and the team took the time to understand what our aspirations are for the business and to structure an appropriate deal based on these.”
John Swarbrick, director at LDC, said: “In a relatively short space of time Quantum Specials has built a strong company based on a superb quality of service and outstanding customer relationships.
“Current demographics suggest that the market for Quantum Specials’ services will continue growing over the coming years and the business has the capacity, expertise and ambition to make the most of these opportunities.
“We’re looking forward to working with management to provide the strategic focus and enhanced operational performance which will help deliver further growth.”
